Audit the path from a video ad’s promise to its landing page
A clear call to action is more than a final frame that says “Learn more.” The spoken ask, on-screen text, platform button, destination page, and first page action should all lead to the same next step.
The five-link CTA chain: What is promised in the video? What does the viewer hear or read as the next step? What does the platform button say? Where does the click land? Can the visitor do that thing immediately? A mismatch at any link is an edit candidate, not proof of lost sales.
Why audit the whole path?
Google’s ABCD guidance for video ads treats “Direction” as an intentional call to action, including a spoken reinforcement when appropriate. TikTok’s performance creative guidance describes a hook, distinct selling points, and a clear CTA as a useful structure. Both are starting points rather than universal formulas.
The click destination matters just as much as the last frame. Google’s landing-page guidance says the page should match the ad’s offer and mirror its call to action. A video that promises a product demo but opens a generic homepage creates a different task for the visitor. That is a concrete message mismatch you can spot before spending on distribution.
Five passes before launch
A 20-second example
Illustrative example, not a real campaign. A 20-second software ad opens with “Stop spending Fridays building reports.” At 0:09 it shows a one-click dashboard export. At 0:17 the voice says “Try the free report builder,” while the end card says “Book a demo.” The platform button reads “Learn more” and the URL opens a general pricing page.
The product demonstration may be good, but four different next steps are competing. One possible revision is to keep the “try” offer, make the end card and platform button point toward the report builder, and send the click to a page where that builder is the first visible action. Another is to keep the demo-booking path and rewrite the spoken ask accordingly. Choose based on the campaign goal; do not claim a winner without a test.
Turn the five-link chain into a usable audit
Use one row per chain element and keep the exported asset, platform setup, and destination evidence separate. A line can be Unconfirmed when you cannot access the placement preview; do not mark it as a pass because the creative file looks correct.
- Identify one version. Record the filename or asset ID, campaign, placement, device preview and review date. Different captions, buttons or URLs create different versions to audit.
- Capture the exact ask. Replay the video with sound on and muted. Note what is spoken, what is burned into the image, and when each appears. Keep a quote tied to the checked source range.
- Inspect the native ad controls. Record the platform caption, native CTA label and final URL from the actual ad preview. A platform button is separate from words rendered in the video; some formats or devices may not show the same controls.
- Follow the destination on a phone. Open the exact preview URL. Compare its first screen, headline, offer, price and first action with the ad's ask. Note load errors or extra steps as evidence, not as a conversion diagnosis.
- Plan one revision, then measure. State the mismatch, proposed edit and owner. After launch, use the campaign's actual click and outcome events. Keep the audience, offer and other major conditions comparable when testing a creative change.
Download the free video ad CTA audit CSV. It includes a clearly labelled hypothetical five-row worked example and blank rows for your own review. It is a manual worksheet, not a platform integration or a claim that the example was tested.
Read a mismatch without overclaiming
In the hypothetical example above, the ad's spoken ask is “Try the free report builder,” while the end card says “Book a demo” and the click opens a general pricing page. That is a visible continuity problem: three different actions appear across the chain. A reviewer could choose one action and align the end card, native button and destination. This observation suggests an edit to test; it does not establish that the mismatch reduced sales or that the new version will convert better.
Keep a separate result row for the campaign objective and the event used to measure it. If the goal is a site visit, report the platform's click measure. If the goal is a signup or purchase, verify that the destination records that action. Video views, button clicks, landing-page visits and confirmed outcomes are different measures, and should not be substituted for one another.
Where AdScanVideo fits
Use Ad intelligence to draft a timestamped first pass over an ad’s hook, product proof, pacing, overlay, and CTA. The report can help locate the moment where the ask appears. If speech cannot be transcribed, the report is visual-only; if a CTA falls between selected frames, it may be missed. Always check the original video, the ad-manager preview, and the live destination yourself. AdScanVideo does not see your campaign’s conversion data or score the landing page.
If you are still shaping the creative, start with our product demo audit or UGC ad scorecard. Use the vertical safe-zone checklist when the CTA sits near placement controls. Our real sample reports show the level of detail to expect from video analysis.
Common questions
Is “Learn more” always a weak video-ad CTA?
No. It can be appropriate for a discovery campaign. The audit asks whether the video has given viewers a reason to learn more and whether the destination answers that curiosity. A specific action is often easier to evaluate when the campaign aims for a concrete conversion.
Should the CTA appear only in the final seconds?
There is no universal timestamp. Google’s video guidance suggests CTAs throughout some full-funnel ads and a direct ask after context for action-oriented ads. Check where your audience has enough information to act, then test versions rather than relying on one rule.
Can I paste a public video URL into AdScanVideo?
No. Upload a supported video file you own or have permission to analyze. AdScanVideo does not accept a public video link as the analysis input.
Does the free report include a PDF or Word export?
The free daily analysis is readable on screen without signup. Verified email sign-in enables watermarked Copy, Word and PDF. One credit removes the watermark from an eligible existing free report without rerunning it; a paid analysis includes exports. Check the live pricing before purchase.
Can AI tell whether my CTA will convert?
No. It can describe what appears and flag inconsistencies; conversion requires campaign and site data. Treat the report as an audit aid, not a forecast.
